The Now Habit by Neil Fiore
&Procrastination is your subconscious mind telling you: something is wrong with this work I'm supposed to be doing. Mostly this revolves around a feeling of "I have to", which is rarely a good reason to do something. If an activity is rewarding in some way (be it a paycheck or some other result), you should want to do it.I've never had much problem with procrastination, but the tips presented in this book seem very valuable to me anyway. Or perhaps I should say: the techniques described are pretty close to my own when I'm at the peek of my productivity, but as usual having a third party spell it out explicitly makes it a lot clearer why the things you do work or don't work.In a nutshell:
- Have the right reasons for doing things
- Think about starting, not finishing (or "always be starting")
- Schedule short blocks (30 minutes, no more) of work, followed by periods of scheduled play
- Take small bites and allow yourself to taste small victories; that is, celebrate how much you've done in 30 minutes instead of thinking of how much left you have to do
