Ringworld by Larry Niven
Typically I'm not into scifi classics, but this one is an exception. Unlike other scifi in its era (the book was published in 1970), its vision of the future is still believalbe today. The central premise is discovery of a man-made world built from a ring facing inward toward a sun, a much more plausible (in terms of materials required and total surface area) version of the Dyson sphere concept.
