Endymion by Dan Simmons
The sequel to Hyperion Cantos, it has a sort of tacked-on feel and lacks the incredible spark of the original work. Still, the Cantos is a hard act to follow, and this one (and the finale of the series, Rise of Endymion) is solid scifi nonetheless. Perhaps the most interesting element is the expanded role of the Catholic church in the universe due to the parasites discovered in the Cantos.
