This one makes a great intro to sci-fi if you're new to the genre. The storyline was a bit simple for my taste (or anyone used to the high complexity of good scifi) and there are only about six main characters, but for people coming from popular fiction this probably makes a good transition. Asher's descriptions are vivid and kept me fairly interested despite the overall simplicity.
