Dune by Frank Herbert
Sand worms, crysknives, Bene Gesserit, the spice - who doesn't love Dune? This sci-fi classic utilizes far-future technology to achieve a setting more like fantasy, perhaps like a more sophisticated Star Wars. I don't hold this one in quite as high regard as most, but I do acknowledge that it is a wonderful work. Don't bother reading anything past the first book though. The endlessly vague mysticism works well for exactly one volume, and then quickly wears out its welcome.
