Black Sun Rising by C.S. Friedman

Truly unique fantasy with a bit of Anne Rice gothic flair. I find myself avoiding fantasy because most of it inevitably seems to be a shoddy knock-off of Tolkien. Not this series. You won't find the slightest bit of fantasy triteness here, even though it has everything you'd except from a sword-and-sorcery novel - plus just a hint of dark gothic beauty.

This is the first novel in the Coldfire Trilogy, which consists of Black Sun Rising, When True Night Falls, and Crown of Shadows.
