Altered States

In the Garden of Iden by Kage Baker

A witty romance set in 16th century Europe, with a sci-fi twist. This is the first in the series of Baker's "The Company" novels, where the premise is a corporation that discovers both immortality and time travel and puts them to use by sending agents back in time to collect lost relics from humanity's history. This was Baker's first book and lacks the maturity and subtlety of her later works. In particular, the book is mostly a romance, with many segments that would be right at home in a pulp romance novel targeted at teenage girls. Still, it's well done, and fun to read - not as overtly humorous as Anvil of the World by far, but plenty of laughter-inducing turns of phrase.

One cannot help but compare this book to the Discworld series, but this is far from copycat material.
